Kristy J. Kaufman, Founder and Board Chair
Kristy J. Kaufman, Founder and Board ChairMrs. Kaufman’s professional career has spanned the fields of corporate and government public relations, marketing, media relations, and politics. She served for two terms as the Marketing and Communications Director for the California Department of Commerce where she directed the state’s multi-million dollar tourism and business development campaigns. The program featured a multi-faceted private sector cooperative marketing and advertising campaign. In between the terms with the Commerce Department, Kaufman served as California Governor George Deukmejian’s press secretary on his re-election campaign.

Prior to public service, Kaufman worked as a media relations specialist for the Bechtel Corporation at the company’s headquarters in San Francisco.

Kaufman brings 25 years of management experience from both the public and private sectors to support the development and growth of the A Note of Thanks program.

Gerald C. Lubenow, Board Member
Gerald C. Lubenow,  MemberMr. Lubenow has enjoyed a 30 year career as a journalist, writer, editor, publications director and public affairs advisor.

Following graduation from Harvard University, Lubenow joined the staff at Newsweek Magazine ultimately taking on assignments as Bureau Chief in San Francisco and London. While at Newsweek, he won two Page One Awards from the Newspaper Guild of New York, one for National Reporting and another for News Feature Writing, and a Gavel Award from The American Bar Association.

After more than 20 years with Newsweek, Lubenow left to become Director of Publications at the Institute of Governmental Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He also served as a speechwriter for Chancellors Chang-lin Tien and Robert M. Berdahl and as a Senior Advisor to the Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs.

Lubenow, now retired from the University of California, continues to apply his writing and editorial skills to projects within the public and government policy arena. He brings tremendous talent and experience to the A Note of Thanks communications program.

Anne Sheehan, Board Member
Anne Sheehan,  MemberMs. Sheehan currently serves as the Director of Corporate Governance of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System. Prior to this position, she served as Chief Deputy Director for Policy at the California Department of Finance, serving on more than 80 boards, commissions, and authorities on behalf of the Director of Finance.

Sheehan has nearly two decades of management and leadership experience on public policy issues. In addition to her current duties, Sheehan's public sector experience includes serving for six years on behalf of former Governor Pete Wilson at the California State and Consumer Services Agency – as Deputy Secretary, Under Secretary, and as Secretary – from 1993 to 1999.

With her considerable experience in the fields of finance and government, Ms. Sheehan will serve as Chair of the A Note of Thanks Budget and Finance Committee.

Tony Oliveira, Board Member
Tony Oliveira, MemberTony Oliveira brings tremendous experience to all aspects of the A Note of Thanks program. He is a veteran of the United States Army, a successful businessman, published writer, song writer and composer.

Oliveira has maintained a long-time commitment to support veterans through music. He has produced and performed in numerous concerts to benefit veterans service organizations. In the Spring of 2008, Oliveira produced and performed in a concert at the Fox Theater in Hanford, California to benefit veterans in the Central Valley. More than 300 disabled veterans received complimentary tickets to attend the “Heroes, A Salute to Our American Veterans” performance. Proceeds from the concert went to support veterans service organizations throughout the region.

Oliveira brings extensive experience in both the private and public sectors. He has served on the Kings County Board of Supervisors since 1999. He also serves on the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) Board of Administration appointed to this post by Governor Schwarzenegger in February of 2007. CalPERS, with assets of $244 billion, is the nation's largest public pension fund.

Tony Oliveira will provide leadership to our organization’s fundraising programs as well as our outreach to members of the music industry and veterans service organizations.

Karstin Hickerson, Board Member and Secretary
Karstin Hickerson, Member and SecretaryMs. Hickerson volunteers her time to serve as Secretary of the organization. She is herself a talented singer and has performed at both private and public events.

Hickerson is employed by Mortgage Capital Funding in Dixon, California, as a senior loan officer and branch manager. In this capacity, she has worked to assist many veterans obtain the necessary financing to purchase a home for their families.
